"Being in Seeds of Hope has helped me understand the different ways that people live due to our different backgrounds, but also how we can still connect and have relationships with each other."
What is your name, how old are you, and where are you from?
My name is Suranne Maguire, I’m 21 and I’m from Portadown. I got involved in the Seeds of Hope programme through Youth Link NI, where I completed my OCN Level 2 in Youth Work.
What is your current background? Are you studying, working, volunteering, or exploring your next steps?
I volunteered for three years with Edgarstown Residents’ Association, and I am now currently employed there as a Youth Support Worker, which I am really proud of. I’ve always wanted to work with young people, so it means a lot to me to now be doing that as my job.
What interests, experiences, or causes are you particularly passionate about?
I’m really passionate about working with young people, especially around disability awareness. This is something close to my heart as I grew up as a young carer, and it’s an area I’d love to keep learning more about and getting involved in.
What hobby or interest do you have that best reflects who you are as a person?
My hobbies are Lego and gaming, and this is how I wind down outside of work.
What are your personal and/or professional goals for the future?
My professional goal was to become a youth worker and I am so happy that this has happened after three years of volunteering. My next goal I am currently working towards is getting a car.
Has the Seeds of Hope programme influenced your direction, outlook, or mindset in any way? If so, how?
Being in Seeds of Hope has helped me understand the different ways that people live due to our different backgrounds, but also how we can still connect and have relationships with each other.
It has also helped me become more creative — before the programme, I hadn’t done art since school, and it has been introduced to me again through the programme. I think art can really help release our inner child.
What aspects of the programme have you enjoyed the most?
In the programme, I have really enjoyed getting to know different people and making new friends.
What key insights, skills, or experiences have you gained through participating in the programme?
I now use the reflection techniques that we were introduced to in Seeds of Hope in my work, which has been really helpful.
